Julian Love: Not ‘Late to the Party’ in Seattle

julian love: not ‘late to the party’ in seattle

One of the Seattle Seahawks’ biggest strengths in 2022 was their young and deep secondary, and they only added more to it this offseason.

They selected Devon Witherspoon, arguably the best cornerback in the draft, at No. 5 overall, but before that, they added former New York Giants safety Julian Love in free agency. Love, 25, was one of the top young safeties on the market this offseason, and now he joins a Seahawks team on the rise after a surprising 2022 season.

Joining a new team and learning a new system always takes some time, but the process seems to be going well for Love so far, in part thanks to his teammates welcoming him with open arms.

“It’s a process, you’ve got to take advantage of each day,” Love said. “I was out here this spring just for that, to get the playbook down and get my surroundings down because come training camp, you want to be hitting the ground running. And everyone has bought in already. I was a little late to the party, but they’ve accepted me and it’s been a good process so far.”

Love now joins a crowded safety room that already features two Pro-Bowlers in Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs. Throughout the spring, he has been snaps with the No. 1 defense alongside Diggs as Adams recovers from injury. Though, the expectation is that all three safeties will see significant playing time once Adams returns.

“When you have a team, you try to put the best players on the field for each situation, and that’s kind of my mindset,” he said. “I have starts at every DB position, so I am a versatile player. So I’m just trying to take advantage. I have a great group around me. I don’t have to do anything outside of myself. I can just lean on the guy next to me to do my job.”

With the three safeties plus three promising young cornerbacks in Witherspoon, Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant, the sky is the limit for Seattle’s secondary. However, Love recognizes that potential is just that, and putting in the work is necessary to realize it.

“I’m not a huge fan of talking about potential,” Love said. “We have a job to do when everyone gets healthy and gets back. I think you look at who we have across the board on paper it looks good; it’s now our job to make that a reality. And so that takes each day grinding, getting close to each other, going out to dinner together, the little things just so we can work as one this season.”
