Opp played its role responsibly, raised public interest issues: Adhir

At the end of the last session of the 17th Lok Sabha, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Saturday observed that Opposition has played its role “responsibly” in the House by raising various issues of immense public interest and debating.

Recalling the matters debated, he said, “… We have also had a fair share of adjournments and loss of business time of the House. Those holding alternate or different views tried to get their points across, which ultimately led to disruptions. This is a part and parcel of our democratic process. Debate and discussion are hallmarks of our Parliamentary system, and adopting even the remotest method of browbeating or stifling those holding alternate views on policy matters and issues is best avoided.”

He said his party in the last few years has played its role “meaningfully.”

Regarding the Parliament security breach incident, Chowdhury said, “I can see and understand that remedial measures are being taken… I am sure we will not be witnessing such incidents or face any form of security threat in future.”

BSP member Malook Nagar highlighted that the first Lok Sabha saw 677 sittings, while the 17th Lok Sabha recorded 300 sittings but in terms of performance the latter saw a higher output. BJD member Bhartruhari Mahtab recounted how Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla invited BJD member Pramila Bisoyi in his chamber and told her that she can speak in Odia and he would give her ample time.

NCP member Supriya Sule said that the political fight can continue but there should not be any bitterness.
