IKEA is well known for its innovative designs and, of course, its affordable prices, having become THE go-to for many when it comes to furnishing their living spaces. But besides its amazing products, IKEA is also known for its endless possibilities in customization and creativity as almost all of its pieces can be changed, mixed and matched, and upgraded into something completely new and unique.
As we live in a generation where being creative and resourceful is highly valued, this feature by IKEA has been an instant hit. People from all over the world have taken to social media to share their innovative hacks and transformations of IKEA products.
One such example is Luisa Ehlgotz, a TikTok creator from Portugal whose video went viral for transforming an ordinary paper towel holder into a kitchen storage shelf. With just a little creativity and some woodworking skills, she managed to make it the perfect addition to her kitchen that not only showcases how versatile IKEA products can be but also inspires others to think outside the box and come up with their own unique creations.
Let’s start off by looking at the original piece that Luisa starts off with. Known as the IKEA ‘Mala’, it is only thirteen dollars online, making it a super affordable piece for someone to flip into something else. It is also way cheaper than the piece that Luisa flips it into!
Starting off, Luisa measures each of the sides, which she deems too high for her hack. She cuts off about a quarter from the end of the piece, which makes it far more useful for what she has in mind. (Seriously, you don’t want something too heavy on your wall!) A small hand-held saw is used to cut off the end, meaning she doesn’t even have to go outside at all!
A few more decorative pieces are then added to give it a bit of aesthetic, then the newly cut down and remodeled piece is all put back together. After that all that is required is putting some peel-and-stick on the back and then lifting it up onto the wall before adding the various accessories.
While Luisa uses it to display some of her glass spice jars and adds hooks to the bottom rail to hang a bunch of kitchen utensils, the reality is that this same hacked-piece could be used pretty much anywhere in your house! Imagine using this in your bathroom and hanging up your loofahs and bathing products, or by your front door for keys, doggy poo bags, leashes, etc!
It is a lot cheaper to go ahead and make this out of the original Mala paper towel holder than buying something like it in the store, so try this out next time you need some creative storage!)
