Jost Capito: VW meint es ernst mit seinem Formel-1-Einstieg

Williams-CEO Jost Capito glaubt, dass der Volkswagen-Konzern seine Zeit nicht mit der Teilnahme an Gesprächen über das künftige Reglement der Formel 1 verschwenden würde, wenn es ihm mit einem möglichen Einstieg nicht ernst wäre.

Auf die Frage, wie er die Ambitionen des Autobauers mit Blick auf die Königsklasse einschätzt, sagt Capito: “Es hängt sehr stark vom Reglement ab, und das Motorenreglement für 2026 ist noch nicht veröffentlicht. Ich denke, dass alles darauf ankommt.”

“Sie haben an den Diskussionen über die Motorenregulierung teilgenommen, und ich glaube nicht, dass sie ihre Zeit damit verschwenden, zu diesen Treffen zu gehen, vor allem wenn der CEO zu diesen Treffen kommt, wenn sie es nicht ernst meinen würden. Aber letztendlich hängt es davon ab, wie die endgültigen Regeln aussehen.”

VW-Einstieg: Ob und in welcher Form noch unklar

Es ist bekannt, dass der VW-Konzern einen möglichen Einstieg in die Formel 1 im Rahmen des nächsten Zyklus des Antriebsreglements, das 2026 in Kraft tritt, entweder mit Porsche oder Audi in Betracht zieht. Die Chefs beider Marken haben in diesem Jahr an einem hochrangigen Treffen mit Formel-1-Offiziellen teilgenommen.

Porsche-Motorsport-Vizepräsident Thomas Laudenbach sagte Anfang des Monats, dass die Bedingungen für einen Einstieg der deutschen Marke jetzt “wahr werden”, dass man aber mit einer endgültigen Entscheidung “nicht zu lange warten” könne.

Auch mit einem möglichen Einstieg als Motorenhersteller, der ein bestehendes Team im Rahmen eines Werksprojekts beliefern könnte, wurde der VW-Konzern in Verbindung gebracht. Dabei wird das Red-Bull-Team, das gerade eine eigene Abteilung für Antriebsstränge aufbaut, als möglicher Partner gehandelt.

Zudem gab es Berichte, wonach McLaren von Audi übernommen worden sei, doch der Rennstall aus Woking dementierte. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass vorsichtige Gespräche über die Möglichkeit eines Zusammenschlusses stattgefunden haben, sich diese Gespräche aber noch in einem relativ frühen Stadium befinden.

Capito: “Schwierig, ein Werksteam zu führen”

Capito betont, es sei “schwierig” für den VW-Konzern, ein eigenes Team aufzubauen, und verweist darauf, dass die Marken bisher mit Partnern zusammengearbeitet hätten, um die operative Seite von Projekten im Rallye- und Sportwagenbereich zu managen.

Der Williams-Teamchef und -CEO war von 2012 bis 2016 Motorsportdirektor von Volkswagen und prägte die dominanten Jahre der Marke in der Rallye-WM maßgeblich mit.

Er sagt: “Ich weiß, dass es mit einem bekannten Team immer schwierig ist, besonders mit einem deutschen Team mit all den gewerkschaftlichen Vorschriften. Man kann nicht wirklich ein Rennteam betreiben. Das ist der Grund, warum Audi in der Vergangenheit mit Joest, mit anderen Teams kooperierte, genauso wie BMW.”

“Weil es sehr schwierig ist, ein Werksteam zu führen”, so Capito. “Vielleicht ist es einfacher, wenn es im Ausland ist. Ich weiß es wirklich nicht. Wenn man sich den Volkswagen-Konzern anschaut, hatten sie in der Vergangenheit verschiedene Strategien.”

“Das Rallye-Team war ein reines Werksteam. Und Porsche hat komplette Werksteams ausgelagert, genau wie Audi. Ich bin nicht in diese Art von Diskussionen involviert, aber ich denke, sie werden genau abwägen, um die richtige Entscheidung zu treffen.”
