Jose Riveiro lauds Orlando Pirates way following four successive finals

The Buccaneers took one step closer to defending their Nedbank Cup trophy next month when they beat Chippa United 3-1 in Gqeberha on Saturday afternoon.

Riveiro reacted to what has been a remarkable first two years for himself at the Soweto giants.

“It’s quite unique to be in four finals in a row, I think it’s not frequent. It tells a lot of good things about the process that we are going through in our club and our team,” said Riveiro.

“I said to the players after the match that, the ones who manage to take us to the finals last season, many of them are not on the field or in the team right now, but they showed us the way to compete and play these types of games.

“This is a team achievement, the level of ambition of the team in this types of tournaments, the level of commitment and way of competing, it doesn’t matter in this scenario.”

Pirates already have the MTN8 title in their cabinet this season and will be looking to hold on to the Ke Yona trophy on 1 June in Nelspruit, with the Spaniard praising the quality of football he is seeing from the players.

“We are not just winning in these tournaments, but playing memorable games for us. We’re going to play one more that will be in our memories forever,” he added.

“At the same time, the team right now is different from the one of last season. To win the Nedbank Cup last season, it was pick and shovel – like working very hard in each and every game.

“It’s part of the process, but now we play with much more confidence and we’re competing at the same level we were competing at last season at the same time.”
