John McEnroe has bemoaned the fact Nick Kyrgios has rarely shown the potential the entire tennis world knows he has. The American’s comments came in the wake of Kyrgios’ exit from the Australian Open, as he was knocked out by one of the tournament favourites.

The Australian wowed his home crowd in the first round as he made light work of Liam Broady in the Melbourne sunshine.

He secured victory in straight sets and in flamboyant fashion, producing several of his trademark trick shots which had the Briton “feeling stupid” as he was powerless to do anything about them.

Sadly Kyrgios could not go on a run at his home Grand Slam, losing to Daniil Medvedev in the second round. But even then he gave a good fist of it, forcing a fourth set against the best player in the draw and matching the Russian at times.

This week has provided a reminder of what the 26-year-old is able to do when he is fully focussed – a state of mind he has struggled to consistently find throughout his career.

Kyrgios’ unfulfilled potential is a source of great consternation for many of those in the tennis world, with McEnroe one of those who wishes the Australian could show his ability more.

The American is no stranger to controversy, having been loud-mouthed on the court during his playing days and being known for his infamous “you cannot be serious” rant.

But those moments never detracted from his ability, as he backed up his attitude with seven Grand Slam singles’ titles and nine more in the doubles.

McEnroe wishes Kyrgios could also show his true ability.

“It’s tough to watch because he’s so talented, so great for the game,” he told Eurosport in the aftermath of the Aussie’s defeat to Medvedev.

“I would love to see him step up and be in the top five or six players [in the world], where I think he belongs.

“I feel bad in a way because you see him make shots like this, play points like this, look at the crowd.

“The guy brings it. I would absolutely love to see him fulfil his potential or get even close to it.”

Kyrgios has barely played any top-level tennis in the last two years, and even before then there were only few glimpses shown of his obvious ability.

The Aussie has admitted himself in the past that he does not have the drive that the top players need and has spoken of his desire to retire by the age of 30.

McEnroe believes this would be a huge waste of talent, and believes that proper application on Kyrgios’ behalf is the only thing missing from his game.

“Between his ears, that’s what’s missing,” he added.

“He’s got great game. I would say tennis-wise, the most talented player I’ve seen in the last 10 years. But you also have to bring what it takes to compete on a day in, day out basis.

“Look at Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. These consummate professionals who do whatever it takes to win and then look at Nick, they realise he’s great for the game.

“He’s got a personality, he’s a smart kid, he’s a good kid, everyone likes him.

“He’s a fantastic talent but you’ve got to be able to put it together, you’ve got to be able to compete on a regular basis and unfortunately Nick hasn’t been able to do that for a while.”
