RTÉ’s hit series Kin will reportedly not be returning to screens for a third season as an actor weighs in on the rumours.
Fans of the crime drama could be fuming as the finale of season two brought in a whopping half a million viewers in Ireland.
Kin is also hugely popular in the UK, with the Aidan Gillen gangland series among the top five most-watched shows on BBC iPlayer this week.
While many viewers would gladly sit down and binge-watch another season of the Kinsella family’s exploits, this might not be possible as many of the main actors’ contracts have ended, RSVP Live reports.
Turkish-Irish actor Sinan Sicimoglu, who starred in Kin as the owner of a pawn shop used by the Dublin crime family to launder their money, opened up about the devastating news.
The star told The Irish Sun: “It’s the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts in 2020 to appear in Kin, but it’s now 2024 and those contract have run out.
“It would be impossible to get Charlie, Clare (Dunne) and Emmett (Scanlan), Sam (Keeley) or Maria (Doyle Kennedy) back on the same set. It must be tough for RTE because Kin is now such a massive hit for the BBC.”
Kin season three
Lots of the main cast are also keeping pretty busy at the beginning of 2024, with Charlie Cox, who played Michael, filming Daredevil: Born Again with Disney+.
Emmett J. Scanlan, who appeared as Jimmy in the hit show, recently starred in the Netflix smash Fool Me Once, playing Shane, a friend of Michelle Keegan’s character.
Finally, Clare Dunne, who won praise for her role as Amanda Kinsella, is undergoing a press tour to promote her new film Small Things Like These, which stars Bafta winner Cillian Murphy.
RTE’s Kin: Jimmy (Emmett J Scanlan) keeps a watch
Sinan added: “I chatted to Charlie when we worked together and I know he loved playing Michael, even though he probably made a fraction on Kin to what he’s paid playing Matt Murdock in Daredevil.
“But even if RTE had a contract to get him back, it would be impossible because of the shooting schedule Charlie has doing Daredevil in the US.”
Speaking to RSVP Magazine, an RTE spokesperson said: “All the partners are in discussions about a third series but there is nothing to announce at the moment.”
