Timo Werner is set to seal a move to Tottenham

Timo Werner is set to arrive at Tottenham tonight to settle the final details of his loan move, football.london understands. The former Chelsea star will seal a six-month loan deal in north London with an option to buy worth around £15.5million.

Spurs have moved quickly to get a deal done for the 27-year-old, who was also linked to Manchester United as the January transfer window opened. The deal should see the club able to cover Son Heung-min’s absence at the Asian Cup this month, and if things go well for the German attacker for the rest of the season a cut-price permanent option would represent great business.

Werner, of course, has history in the Premier League after enduring a tough time during his stint at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022. Despite playing his part in a Champions League-winning campaign for the Blues, his domestic goal record was slightly underwhelming at Stamford Bridge with just 10 Premier League goals across his two seasons in west London.

However, he registered 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances for the Blues, meaning a goal involvement in nearly every other game. He was unable to match the remarkable figures from the season before he came to the Premier League, netting 34 goals in 45 matches with 13 assists in that 2019/20 campaign for Leipzig, following on from a couple of impressive seasons before that.

In 2022 the attacker headed back to Leipzig on a four-year deal in a transfer worth around £25million, but having recorded nine Bundesliga goals in his first campaign he has scored just twice this time around, with the German side allowing a loan deal this month.

Ange Postecoglou has been hoping to bolster the side in a number of areas including centre-back, with links to Radu Dragusin heavy as the month began. While the manager was clear in needing to get deals done early in the window, that transfer is yet to be completed.

Werner will become Spurs’ first incoming transfer of the month, though both Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon rejoined the team after their loan deals at Leeds Untied and Manchester United respectively were ended prematurely.
