Jets' Robert Saleh explains why Zach Wilson's injury isn't a setback for the rookie quarterback

New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson exited the Week 7 matchup against the New England Patriots early due to a knee injury, and the reported diagnosis is a strained PCL that will knock him out for 2-4 weeks. Wilson hasn’t exactly had the hottest start to his career, but head coach Robert Saleh doesn’t believe this is a setback. In fact, the injury will give Wilson an opportunity to do something he hasn’t done yet.

“I don’t think it’s a setback,” Saleh said, via SNY Jets. “It’s always good to be able to step away and watch the offense through the lens of another quarterback, and we thought Mike [White] did a really nice job yesterday running the offense.”

Some believe the majority of rookie quarterbacks should sit for some time behind a veteran as they transition to the next level. It allows them more time to learn the offense and to see what it’s like to be a professional signal-caller from someone who has done it before. Wilson, who has started all six games for the Jets, now gets that chance — though to be fair, if the Jets continue to go with Mike White’s, he’ll be watching a quarterback who hasn’t played much in the NFL himself.

Wilson is tied atop the league for most interceptions thrown this year with nine, and has thrown just four touchdowns. His offensive line hasn’t been the biggest help, but he has improved over the past few weeks. It will be interesting to see how he fares when he returns, and if he will be able to pick anything up from watching another quarterback play. For the time being, however, this is White’s offense.
