Jets’ Robert Saleh, Eagles’ Nick Sirianni react to late hit on Jalen Hurts: ‘Egregiously awful,’ Saleh says

Jets coach Robert Saleh was happy that his team earned a 24-21 win over the Eagles in their first preseason contest of 2022 on Friday.

But Saleh did want to address something serious after the game: he did not approve of linebacker Quincy Williams’ late hit on Jalen Hurts in the first quarter.

Saleh chided Williams during his postgame news conference. He called the play “egregiously awful” and said that Williams “knows better” than to hit a quarterback out of bounds.

“Those are the plays that Quincy has got to get out of his game if he wants to become the linebacker that we all think he can be,” Saleh said.

INJURY UPDATE: Zach Wilson suffers non-contact knee injury vs. Eagles

The hit occurred on New York’s first defensive drive of the game. The Jets pressured Hurts on a third-and-5 play and managed to force him to scramble. He ran out of bounds for no gain, but Williams came across and hit him hard well past the sideline.

Hurts was unhurt, but the hit still enraged his teammates and coach Nick Sirianni. Sirianni shouted a profanity to Saleh on the opposite sideline to let him know how much he disapproved of the play.

Saleh understood exactly why the Philadelphia coaches were angry, and he didn’t defend Williams. He also pointed out to his player that the penalty cost the Jets points. They had the Eagles stopped, but the 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness kept Philadelphia’s drive alive. Eventually, the Eagles scored a touchdown.

“You know, it’s one thing to make a mistake in the game,” Saleh said. “It’s another thing to make a mistake that leads to points.”

While Sirianni appeared angry with Saleh immediately after the hit, he said after the contest that there was no bad blood between the two.

“I was mad at the situation,” Sirianni said in his postgame news conference. “I was more mad obviously at the player than coach Saleh.”

“Coach Saleh’s a great guy. I’ve got so much respect for him,” Sirianni added. “I was just sticking up for Jalen. I’ll never apologize for sticking up for my players.”

And Hurts greatly appreciated that support from his coaches and teammates.

“That’s us having each other’s backs,” Hurts said. “That’s Philly.”
