Zach Wilson
It’s no secret that the New York Jets are searching for the team’s next starting quarterback. As the Jets patiently wait for the Aaron Rodgers situation to resolve, much has been made about the future of Zach Wilson with the team. While the organization has been adamant about developing the former second-overall pick, New York has publicly flirted with Rodgers and other various veteran quarterback options.
Speaking with reporters at the annual league meetings in Phoenix, Arizona on Monday, Jets coach Robert Saleh finally addressed the Wilson situation. He was asked point blank if the 23-year-old embattled quarterback would be his No. 2 on the depth chart entering offseason workouts.
“We’re really excited to work with him,” Saleh said via SNY’s Jets Videos on Twitter. “He’s our number two…I really still think Zach has a future in this league to be a really good quarterback, I really do. He has the work ethic. He has the mindset. He’s coming in here to attack it. We’re counting on him to be a fixture here for a while.”
Despite leading the Jets to a 5-4 record, he was benched multiple times during his sophomore season and endured struggles on the field, while receiving a hefty heaping of criticism off of it. Last season, Wilson completed 54.5% of his passes while throwing for 1,688 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Actions oftentimes speak louder than words, but the Jets seem committed to developing Wilson, who has yet to blossom into the franchise quarterback New York drafted him to be. Playing behind Rodgers, who he considers to be his idol, could certainly help Wilson’s development going forward.
