Sunday Headlines: Controversial Goaltending Review Edition
The Kentucky Wildcats’ overtime loss to Texas A&M on Saturday was tough to swallow. The No. 6 Wildcats battled throughout regulation but ran out of gas in the extra five minutes and were handed their third loss of the season, 97-92.
Either fanbase would lobby that the officiating for both teams was below average. There were many calls throughout the game that could’ve gone either way.
One call that raised an eyebrow came with 5:55 left in the first half. Kentucky freshman DJ Wagner went for a layup and had his shot “blocked” by Wildens Leveque. That blocked shot was recovered by Kentucky’s Ugonna Onyenso, but the play was blown dead and instead ruled as a goaltending call by the officials — granting Kentucky two points.
After the next timeout that was called, the play was reviewed, and the call was reversed — which is odd for the flow of a game and rather unheard of.
Now, of course, that’s not the reason Kentucky lost the game to Texas A&M. Kentucky had more than 25 minutes of action to out-score Texas A&M. Wagner also had a turnover in the final seconds of regulation that cost Kentucky the opportunity to have the final shot.
There were so many scenarios that Kentucky could have won the game, but instead, they struggled on defense and could hardly rebound the basketball.
However, it is odd that the points that were ruled as “routine” goaltending were later wiped out.
After Saturday’s game, Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader had a story with comments from Kentucky head coach John Calipari after the game. Click here to read more.
