Chelsea bonuses for Carabao Cup glory revealed as Todd Boehly tightens pursestrings

The Chelsea squad will share a bonus pot of £500,000 if they win the Carabao Cup final.

Victory over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday will signify the first major trophy of the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital era since they took over from Roman Abramovich in May 2022. The club’s new owners have managed to trim the wage bill, as well as keeping a stern idea on bonuses on offer. This is despite the significant spending in the transfer market, which has seen the Blues spend over £1billion in the last two years.

Despite struggling in the Premier League, Chelsea’s form in domestic cup competitions has been impressive this season. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have overcame Wimbledon, Brighton, Blackburn, Newcastle and Middlesbrough to reach the final and they will get an opportunity to earn a modest bonus this weekend.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea’s players will share a £500k prize fund if they beat Liverpool. The club’s bonus scheme entitles every player who has played in the Carabao Cup this season, with the percentage of the pot depending on the number of minutes they have donned this season. Should the prize pot be divided equally, each player in Pochettino’s 25-man squad would earn £20,000.

Manchester United, who won last year’s Carabao Cup final, shared £1.6m between the squad. The winner of this season’s competition will pocket £100,000 from the EFL, with the FA Cup prize money far more significant. Chelsea offer far more significant bonuses related to the Champions League, whether that be for qualifying or winning the whole competition, as they did in May 2021.

Chelsea head into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final showdown off the back of an impressive 1-1 draw at Manchester City last weekend. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Blues, before Rodri equalised late on to deny the Blues a vital three points on the road at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino

Speaking after the match – which left Chelsea 10th in the table – Pochettino said: “So pleased. But I need to tell you and to everyone, the penalty against Gallagher at Liverpool, I think changed completely the game and now you are using some games away from home against the big teams to say yes, but of course today was a great performance.

“We scored first. The first half was a very good game. We are so pleased. I think I told the players that I am so pleased and congratulate them; the effort was massive. The spirit we showed today, I think it’s the way we want to compete in this way.

“Of course, so pleased because we played against a team that is the best in the world, never easy. And today, the character they showed, the personality the players and the team, it makes me very, very happy.”
