Russia Issues Arrest Warrant for Alexei Navalny's Brother Days After Noted Kremlin Critic's Death

Russia has issued an arrest warrant for Alexei Navalny’s brother within days of the death of the noted critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Knewz.com has learned that Russian authorities have not publicly specified the grounds on which Oleg Anatolyevich Navalny is to be arrested.

The database of the Russian Interior Ministry only mentioned that Oleg is “wanted under an article of the Criminal Code.”

Law enforcement agencies told the Russian state media outlet TASS that “new charges had been filed against Oleg Navalny.” However, they too, have yet to provide more light on the details of the arrest warrant.

Previously, the Preobrazhensky Court in Moscow handed Navalny’s brother a one-year suspended sentence in 2021 for allegedly trying to organize an “unauthorized rally,” according to the Daily Express.

“Under the conditions of his probation, he was barred from leaving the house at night, attending mass events, or traveling outside Moscow… Six months later, a correctional inspection submitted a petition demanding that Oleg be locked up. By the time a court greenlit his incarceration in February 2022, Oleg had fled Russia,” the New York Post elaborated.

The news outlet further mentioned that court officials believed at the time that Navalny’s brother had boarded a flight to the Republic of Cyprus, adding that the current whereabouts of the “wanted man” are unknown.

“The 40-year-old was already on the Ministry’s wanted list in connection with another case, in which he was accused of violating Russia’s COVID restrictions by encouraging people to join Alexei Navalny’s unsanctioned anti-government protests,” the New York Post added.

The Daily Express noted that Navalny’s brother was sentenced to over three years in prison in 2014, after being convicted of fraud in a case that involved the Russian subsidiary of the French cosmetics firm Yves Rocher. He was released from prison in 2018.

The timing of Oleg being placed in the Russian administration’s crosshairs is interesting, to say the least, as it came within days of Navalny’s mysterious death in incarceration, and Navalny’s wife claiming that the blame for her husband’s death rests entirely on the shoulders of President Putin and the Kremlin.

Anton Gerashchenko, the Advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs, also pointed out this angle in his statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, as he wrote, “As soon as Alexei Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, made a statement about the fact that the body of her elder son was not being released, the regime immediately declared the younger son wanted.”

Regarding Navalny’s body not having been released to his family, his wife Yulia Navalnaya said in a statement, “Vile and cowardly they are now hiding his body, they are not showing it, not giving it to his mother and they are pathetically lying and waiting for the traces of yet another of Putin’s novichoks to disappear there.”

“My husband could not be broken. And that’s exactly why Putin killed him. Shameful, cowardly, not daring to look into his eyes or simply say his name,” Yulia further alleged, according to the Daily Express.

It is worth noting that in an exclusive conversation with the news outlet, Putin’s former speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov warned that Putin is allegedly plotting to have Navalny’s wife killed in a bid to uproot the opposition movement in Russia.

Gallyamov added that Yulia has all of the attributes needed to continue Navalny’s work and challenge the Putin regime the same way her late husband did. “Everyone should worry about her safety. But at least she is abroad,” he told the Daily Express.
