Novak Djokovic kisses Australian Open trophy
Novak Djokovic is looking to win an 11th Australian Open crown and a 25th Grand Slam title overall at the 2024 Australian Open, which will begin on January 14.
The world No 1, who secured the first of the three majors he won during an incredible 2023 season at the Australian Open, is a strong favourite to defend the men’s title in Melbourne.
Here, we look at seven statistics that illustrate Djokovic’s amazing success at the tournament he has dominated like no other.
Djokovic has won the Australian Open more than any other event
With his 10 titles, Djokovic has won the Australian Open more times than any other tournament, with his seven triumphs at Wimbledon, the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals his next highest tallies.
The world No 1’s haul at the Melbourne major makes up 41.67% of his 24 Grand Slam crowns, while the 10 victories account for 10.2% of his 98 ATP titles.
Record for most men’s and most Open Era titles
Djokovic has won an all-time men’s record of 10 Australian Open crowns from 18 appearances at the tournament, having claimed mis maiden major in Melbourne in 2008. Roy Emerson and Roger Federer sit joint-second on the men’s list with six titles.
The Serbian’s 10 titles is also an overall Open Era record at the event, with Margaret Court’s 11 – including her seven Amateur era titles – the most of all time across men’s and women’s tennis.
Head-to-head dominance against ‘Big Four’ rivals
Djokovic has completely dominated Andy Murray (5-0), Roger Federer (4-1) and Rafael Nadal (2-0) – the three biggest rivals he has had in his career – at the Australian Open.
This makes for a staggering combined 11-1 record against his fellow ‘Big Four’ members at the event, with all of these victories coming in either the final or semi-finals.
Unbeaten in finals
The 36-year-old is remarkably undefeated in all the championship matches he has contested on Rod Laver Arena between 2008 and 2023 with a 10-0 record.
His victories came against: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2008), Andy Murray (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016), Rafael Nadal (2012 and 2019), Dominic Thiem (2020), Daniil Medvedev (2021) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (2023).
Unbeaten in semi-finals
Djokovic also holds a perfect 10-0 record in semi-final matches at Melbourne Park, defeating: Roger Federer (2008, 2011, 2016 and 2020), Andy Murray (2012), David Ferrer (2013), Stan Wawrinka (2015), Lucas Pouille (2019), Aslan Karatsev (2021) and Tommy Paul (2023).
The Serbian has lost three times at the quarter-final stage (2009, 2010 and 2014), twice in the fourth round (2007 and 2018), once in the second round (2017) and twice in the first round (2005 and 2006).
Highest win rate
The world No 1 has a stunning 89-8 record at the Australian Open, giving him a win percentage of 91.8% – which is the highest at the event for any men’s player in the Open Era.
American greats Jimmy Connors (91.7%) and Andre Agassi (90.6%) are the only other male players with a win percentage of over 90% at the tournament in the Open Era.
Undefeated since 2018
Heading into the 2024 Australian Open, Djokovic is on a 28-match winning streak at the Melbourne Grand Slam, having won it the last four times he has competed (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023). This is his longest run of successive wins at the tournament.
The 36-year-old’s last defeat at the Australian Open came in 2018, when he fell to Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.
