new seven-day cold weather alert issued warning of widespread disruptive snow

A new cold weather alert has been issued by the UKHSA

A new seven-day cold weather alert has been issued for the whole of England. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said there could be “widespread, disruptive snow to low-levels” through next week.

The yellow alert is valid from noon today (Thursday, January 11) until noon on Thursday, January 18. The warning reads: “During the weekend, the area of high pressure will become displaced to the west, allowing a much colder northerly flow to develop across the whole country.”

The forecast also warns of “increasingly wintry showers” and “some very low overnight temperatures”. There will also be a “significant wind chill”, it adds.

The warning adds: “On Tuesday a weather system may move across northern and central parts of the UK. Dependant on the exact track and intensity of this feature [it may bring] some potentially disruptive snow to low levels.

“Furthermore, into Wednesday, another weather system could bring more widespread and disruptive snow to low levels across central and southern parts of England.”

It adds the alert may be escalated to amber depending on the latest forecasts. The alert comes amid a warning the UK could face the “worst snow for 14 years”.

James Madden, of forecasters Exacta Weather, said that the risk of snow was higher than at any point since “the big freeze of 2010” Birmingham Live reports He added: “It is likely we are about to start seeing images of vast regions of the nation covered in snow during a cold spell which is likely to hold out for an extended period.

“As well as the risk of snow, we will see harsh overnight frosts and the coldest temperatures dipping as low as -15C in the coldest parts of the country over the coming weeks.”
