James Tavernier sounds Rangers title alarm as captain gives 'just not good enough' verdict

Asia's Tech News Daily

James Tavernier has warned that Rangers ’ title hopes are on the line if they don’t sort out their home form.

The Ibrox captain rescued a point against Aberdeen with a late penalty on Wednesday night but admitted he was at fault for the Dons second goal – scored by Scott Brown – that left the hosts with a mountain to climb after just 15 minutes.

The 2-2 draw was the third time this term that Steven Gerrard ’s side have dropped points at home, having previously drawn with Motherwell and Hearts, and Tavernier insists that’s good enough.

Resurgent Celtic have closed to within two points at the top of the league and Tavernier admitted that his side needs to improve to keep them at arms’ length.

He said: “If we are to compete for the league and keep our title, we have got to make this a fortress and not drop any points.

“It has just not been good enough in the games we have had at home. From start to finish, there have been spells in the games but we have not had a consistency.

“We need to look at ourselves and improve. That is what we have to do.

“We know we have to improve and obviously it has to be done starting this weekend.”

Rangers face two tough away games before taking on Ross County at Ibrox on November 7 and Tavernier is adamant that his side must put the Aberdeen disappointment to bed when they take on Motherwell on Sunday and Brondby in Copenhagen next Thursday night.

Speaking to Rangers TV, he added: “We have got to go from the starting whistle. We have got to have a solid performance and get back to clean sheets and keep that consistency level of being solid, hard to break down.

“And we have got to do it at the other end of the pitch as well and create chances and put the ball in the back of the net. We have to have three points at the weekend.”

And reflecting on the Aberdeen performance, Tavernier said: “I’m really disappointed. It was 10 minutes of madness at the start of the game.

“We made the first mistake and the second mistake is my fault, I have got to hold my hand up for that. I let my runner go in the box and then it is an uphill fight from there.

“Just really disappointed in our performance. We didn’t test Joe Lewis enough and we are obviously dropping too many points at home.”

Tavernier reached a personal milestone on Wednesday, notching his 50th goal for the club but he claims he took little satisfaction from it, saying: “I am just happy that it went in the back of the net. But we dropped points, so that to me is irrelevant. I want to leave this place with three points and we didn’t do that.”
