next year, they have to relook it…: shardul thakur sends bcci big ranji trophy warning amid strict stance

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looks to ensure players make the Ranji Trophy a priority once again and has taken a strict stance to ensure all players take part in India’s premier first-class competition, star Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur has sent the Indian cricket board a major warning over the tournament.

After his maiden first-class century in the semi-final against Tamil Nadu, Shardul warned the BCCI that they were walking into a situation where players would have frequent injuries. Shardul questioned the scheduling of the tournament and asked the Indian cricket governing body to review the fixtures and give more breaks in between matches.

“If the boys keep playing like this for two more seasons, there will be a lot of injuries across the country. It’s difficult because we are playing First-Class matches with three-day gaps and I don’t think it has ever happened. When I started playing in the Ranji Trophy matches, the first three games used to have a three-day break, then a four-day break and then the knockouts had a five-day break.

“Now we have seen all matches are played at three-days’ gap, so it is extremely tough for domestic players to expect them to play 10 games in a row with just a three-day gap if the team reaches the final,” Thakur told reporters here on Sunday. “I think next year they will have to relook at it and give more breaks (between Ranji Trophy matches). The schedule is becoming tighter and tighter. If boys keep playing like this for two more seasons, there will be a lot of injuries across the country,” said Shardul Thakur speaking to the media after Day 2 of play in the semi-final at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) ground.

Shardul put Mumbai on top of the game after a top order collapse, as his knock of 109 in just 105 balls has ensured the hosts have a first-inning lead of 207 runs at stumps on Day 2.
