Care to spend an evening with alt-rock Gandalf and his guitar wizardry?

J Mascis, frontman for the legendary Dinosaur Jr., is heading to Australia early next year and has announced two exclusive solo shows.

Arriving in February, Dinosaur Jr. will perform 1993 album Where You Been in full to mark its 30th anniversary while in the country. But Mascis will also treat fans in Sydney and Brisbane to his solo material.

Despite being lower in volume than the furious fretwork of his main gig, Mascis alone maintains the same vibe, thanks to his distinctive vocals and love for a woolly guitar solo.

These performances are sure to be special for diehards, as they’ll mark the first opportunity fans will get to experience material from Mascis’ upcoming fifth solo album What Do We Do Now ahead of its release on 2 February.

We’ve already experience lead single ‘Can’t Believe We’re Here’ (and its music video featuring celeb fans like David Cross, Fred Armisen, IDLES, Bully and more), which has all the of the shaggy charm of his best work.

You can bet Mascis will also cherry-pick from his 40-year songbook of alt-rock gems, including fan favourites like ‘Me Again’, ‘See You At The Movies’ and his cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’.

It’s been seven years since the singer-guitarist was Down Under, so keep that in mind if you’re on the fence about heading along to see Mascis or Dinosaur Jr., who also headline Geelong’s Tent Pole festival in February.
