Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan visited the scene at around 9pm on Friday night, for a preliminary post mortem examination.
The body was removed from the scene shortly after 10pm on Friday night and taken to the Cork City Morgue.
A full post mortem examination is expected to take place on Saturday.
A forensics examination was being conducted at the scene on Friday night.
A Garda statement said: “Gardaí were called to a residence at Richmond Hill earlier this afternoon, where the body of a woman in her 50s was discovered. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Currently, the scene is preserved for examination by local scenes of crime officers. Both the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified.”
One source said that the nature of the discovery caused concerns, which led to gardaí notifying the office of the State Pathologist.
