Itsu dumplings sold in Sainsbury's and Asda have been recalled as they may contain plastic

Itsu pork dumplings have been recalled over concerns they may contain “small pieces of plastic”.

The Food Standards Agency issued the recall notice for the frozen “Itsu Sizzling Pork Gyoza” this week warning that the “possible presence of plastic” made them unsafe to eat. The notice reports that the products affected are 240g, have a barcode of 5060262485743, and the best-before date of March 8 2025. Itsu confirmed that none of its other grocery products – or best-before dates – are affected by the recall. The affected packs are also sold in Asda and Sainsbury’s.

The packs, containing 12 pork-filled dumplings which can be cooked in three and a half minutes, are typically on sale in supermarkets for £4.25.

If you have bought the product, Itsu says you need to “dispose of them”. You also need to send a picture of the best-before date – which is located on the reverse of the packaging – and send it to: [email protected]. You can also write to them at itsu (grocery), Partnership House, Carlisle Place, London, SW1P 1BX. For more information on the recall, you can call Itsu’s customer service line on 0333 224 9510.

In a statement, Itsu said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation.”

What are recall notices?

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn’t working as it should be. The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be “withdrawn” which is where is it taken off the shelves or “recalled” which is when customers are asked to return it.

Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
