man city vs real madrid: with no away goal rule in champions league, what happens after a draw
The second leg of the Manchester City vs Real Madrid UCL quarterfinal second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday finished 1-1 at the end of regular time. The two sides were at 4-4 aggregate (the teams played a 3-3 draw in the first leg). Now, the blockbuster game enters extra-time If no goal is scored in the added 30 minutes, the two sides will play a penalty shootout.
Several fans wondered why the winner was not decided on the away-goal rule. The rule handed the win to the team that had scored most away goals, when the aggregate scores were level after two legs. However, it was scrapped for the 2023-24 Champions League season.

If the two sides cannot be separated in a UCL knockout match after the regular 90 minutes, a 30-minute extra-time is played. If the scores are still level after 120 minutes, the match goes to a shootout.
In the shootout, both teams get five penalties each. The kicks are taken alternately by each side. The team that scores the most penalties, wins. If one side establishes an unassailable lead before the end of the 10 kicks, the shootout ends. If the scores remain level after five penalities each, they play additional rounds of single sudden-death spot kicks. This goes on until one scores and the other misses.

On Wednesday, Rodrygo scored the opening goal in the 12th minute to give Madrid a key 1-0 lead. Bellingham carried the ball down the pitch and sent it to Vinicius Jr on the right. The Brazilian then found Rodrygo only for the latter to blast it at Ederson, who saved the first attempt but failed to do anything about the rebound.
Kevin De Bruyne equalled for Man City in the 76th minute.
