The Turkwel River flows from Mount Elgon on the Kenya-Uganda border to Lake Turkana, a length of approximately 340 kilometres. The name Turkwel is derived from the Turkana name for the Tir-kol, which means a river that withstands the wilderness.

The Turkwel River’s flow is seasonally varied, subject to flash floods in the rainy season. Nevertheless, the river’s significance extends beyond its natural features. It plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem and communities.
