Rentangay scheme suspect arrested in Dagupan

A 30-year-old suspect allegedly involved in a “rentangay” scheme was arrested in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

Operatives of the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) NCR nabbed the suspect in a nightclub for allegedly violating Republic Act No. 6539 or the Anti-Carnapping Law.

“Ito ay matagal nang binabantayan, kasi tumakas ito eh, from Tondo, Manila to Pangasinan,” Police Colonel Neil Francia, Chief of PNP-HPG NCR, said in Emil Sumangil’s exclusive  “24 Oras” report on Wednesday.

(We’ve been tailing him. He escaped from Tondo, Manila to Pangasinan.)

“Mag-re- rent ka ng sasakyan, tapos bibigyan mo ng dalawang araw ng advance, mawawala na bigla tapos ibebenta.  May previous na kaso na ito eh, nakapag piyansa lang,” he said.

(What they do is they rent vehicles and give two-day advanced payment to the victims. Then they will disappear and sell the stolen vehicle. He had a previous case but was freed on bail.)

The suspect denied the accusation, saying he was also a victim.

“Totoong nawala ang sasakyan pero hindi ako ang dahilan. Ni-rentahan ko ang sasakyan may kumuha sa akin na tao, binenta sa ibang tao rin,” he said.

(The vehicle was indeed lost but I did sell it. I just rented it but another person collected and sold it.)

The PNP-HPG issued reminders to the public.

“Manghingi kayo ng valid  ID, kilalanin niyo talaga. Tapos ang pinakamaganda diyan, lagyan ng GPS,” Francia said.

(If you are renting your vehicle, make sure to ask for a valid ID. Also, install a GPS on your vehicles.)

Snatcher nabbed at EDSA Busway

Meanwhile, the PNP-HPG also apprehended a snatcher victimizing passengers at the EDSA Busway.

Police said the group behind the crime involved three suspects. One of them would steal the item before dropping it on the floor.  Another suspect will pick it up while the other will block the victim.

“Hindi ito makakaya ng isa. Ikaw lang ang maglalaglag ng cellphone, tapos iba ang pulot, nasa likod,” said Francia.

(This is a kind of crime that cannot be done by only one suspect.)

The suspect admitted to committing the crime and apologized over the incident.

“Wala po akong pera, kailangan namin ng pang-kain. Di ko na uulitin sakaling akoy makalaya muli,” he said.

(I only did it because I don’t have money. I will not do it again should I be freed.)

“Kung naririnig niyo ako, sana mapatawad niyo ko, para ako’y makapagbago, hindi ko na uulitin,” he added.
