Maidaan box office collection: Ajay Devgn’s sports drama crashes by 75% on Monday; collect just Rs 1.50 crore
At the start of the year it was being claimed that 2024 is going to be Ajay Devgn’s year as the superstar has five films lined up for release. He also began the year on a good note where his first film ‘Shaitaan’, with R Madhavan and Jyotika, minted more than Rs 145 crore at the box office.
Post the success of ‘Shaitaan’, all attention was diverted to his long delayed sports drama ‘Maidaan’, which was based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, the architect of the golden period of Indian football which lasted from 1952 to 1962. The film was backed by Boney Kapoor and directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma of ‘Badhaai Ho’ fame. The film has been struggling at the box office from the time its paid premieres took place on April 10 and followed by a full fledged release on April 11.
For its paid premieres the film earned about just Rs 2.6 crore and was able to nearly double its collection on the occasion of Eid on Thursday to Rs 4.5 crore. On Friday, ‘Maidaan’ saw a drop once again and collected just Rs 2.75 crore, but it jumped massively on Saturday and Sunday, earning Rs 5.75 crore and Rs 6.4 respectively. The film was expected to hold on to the good weekend numbers but it crashed by more than 75 percent on Monday, and earned just Rs 1.50 crore, as per early estimates by Sacnilk. The overall collection of the film now stands at Rs 23.50 crore.
‘Maidaan’ is touted to be made on the budget of more than Rs 100 crore and going by the trend, it looks like the makers may face some losses. Besides Ajay Devgn, the film also stars Priyamani and Gajraj Rao.
