Condemning brutal attack by a mob on ISKCON devotees in Bangladesh’s Noakhali and killing of an ashram devotee, ISKCON Vice-President Radharaman Das wrote to the United Nations on Saturday requesting the United Nations to issue condemnation of “violence against the Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh” and send their delegates to Bangladesh to look into the matter. He also wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into the matter.

“We have written letters to the United Nations and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We will stage silent protests in all metropolitan cities, including Kolkata, against this,” ISKCON Vice-President Radharaman Das said today.

Writing about the violent attack on ISKCON premises in Noakhali and brutal killing of an ashram devotee, Das highlighted how a mob of more than 200 entered its Noakhali premises and “unleased terror for three hours”, injuring several and vandalizing its temple.

“Yesterday a mob of 200 plus entered our ISKCON Noakhali premises and unleashed terror for 3 hours. One of our devotees was killed and many were missing. Many are critically injured and fighting for their lives. Today morning we found the dead body of our ashram devotees Partha Das who was missing since yesterday evening, floating in the temple pond,” Das’ wrote in his letter to the United Nations.

Partha Das was a 25-year-old devotee who was allegedly killed. “Partha Das was brutally murdered with sharp weapons, was found today morning floating in the temple pond, he added.

“Our ISKCON temple was completely vandalized and many portions have been completely burnt. All our deities have been broken. Altogether 150 houses nearby were looted and vandalized,” the letter elaborated on the gruesome scenario for the attack.

He also mentioned that the attacks on the Hindu minority community went unabated for the last nine days.

Das sought serious intervention from the international community and the Bangladesh government.

In a tweet this morning, ISKCON authority said, “ISKCON temple and devotees were violently attacked today by a mob in Noakhali, Bangladesh. Temple suffered significant damage & the condition of a devotee remains critical. We call on the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of all Hindus and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Silent protest was staged by the devotees in Bangladesh’s Noakhali as well.

Several local media reports claimed that Durga Puja pandals and idols were vandalised in Bangladesh in the recent past.

Following recent vandalism of Durga idols in Commila town, reports of violence had come from temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, Chattogram’s Banshkhali and Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua, after a rumour spread in social media.

With several incidents of violence reported in Bangladesh, AITC leadership on Saturday demanded effective steps by the Prime Minister’s Office. The Trinamool Congress leadership has urged the PMO to take action for protection of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Expressing serious concern about the recent incidents in Bangladesh, Kunal Ghosh, Trinamool State General Secretary tweeted, “We are receiving disturbing information from Bangladesh. Why is PMO silent on this? We demand effective action from our government on this matter.”

LoP Suvendu Adhikari has also written a letter to PM Narendra Modi seeking his intervention, a few days back when durga idols were desecrated and pandals and idols were vandalized.

The CPI-M Polit Bureau, in a statement, expressed serious concern over the outbreak of communal violence and clashes during the Durga Puja period in Bangladesh.

“The Bangladesh government has deployed forces to quell the violence and assured that justice will be delivered punishing those responsible for triggering this communal violence,” the statement said.
