‘Danger’ heat index level hit 11 areas on Sunday, April 21

MANILA, Philippines — The heat index in 11 areas nationwide reached the “danger” level on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

According to Pagasa, a heat index of 42°C to 51°C falls under the “danger” category and would likely cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, while heat stroke is probable with continued heat or sun exposure.

In its latest bulletin, the state weather bureau said two areas—Puerto Princesa and Aborlan Palawan— recorded the highest temperature hitting 44°C.

This is followed by seven areas under 43°C which are: Aparri, Cagayan; Infanta, Quezon; Virac, Catanduanes; Masbate City, Masbate; Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Pili, Camarines Sur;  Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Meanwhile, Dagupan City, Pangasinan and Iloilo City, Iloilo reached 42°C.

Amid the extreme heat, Pagasa advised the public to limit outdoor time.

It also advised the public to drink plenty of water, avoid tea, coffee, soda, and liquor, use umbrellas, wear hats, and wear sleeved clothing outdoors, and schedule heavy-duty activities during the cooler periods of the day.
