Is Spider-Man: No Way Home the End of a Franchise?

Marvel fans can’t wait for the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but they might not be excited for what comes after. According to Tom Holland, there’s a good chance that this might be the last Spider-Man film for a while.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Marvel actor shared that every cast and crew member went into filming with the belief that this would be the end of the line—at least for the Marvel-Sony Spider-Man franchise.

“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say. I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy,” shared Holland. “We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”

Holland has been playing Peter Parker since the character was introduced in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. The character has since appeared in every ensemble Marvel film in addition to Spider-Man’s own solo films. But based on Holland’s interview, No Way Home might be Spidey’s last solo film for quite some time.

It makes sense, from a fan’s point of view. Spider-Man has received three incarnations in the last 20 years, so it’s probably a headache for the screenwriter’s room to come up with new content. And in retrospect, the upcoming appearance of the Green Goblin, Electro, and Doctor Octopus might not be coincidental after all. Instead of a treat for the fans, the “reunion” of Spider-Man’s biggest foes might perhaps be Marvel and Sony’s way to let Spider-Man go out with a bang.

Even if Spider-Man will end with No Way Home, we’ll still be seeing Holland reprise his role in the upcoming Marvel movies. Especially now that he’s been roped into the (broken) multiverse.

Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in U.S. theaters on December 17.
