irish weather: hail showers and very heavy rain on the way as areas at ‘highest risk’ pinpointed

Hailstorm on the road in a summer day

Showers of hail and very heavy rain are set to hit parts of the country on Sunday and heading into Monday ahead of a wet end to what has been a very damp April to date.

Met Éireann has forecast that frequent showers will sweep across the country after starting in the west on Sunday, with the worst showers turning to hail in places.

Cloudy conditions will affect most of the country on what will be another cold night on Sunday, with temperatures dropping to as low as 3 degrees.

Those conditions are set to continue into Monday, when Met Éireann warns there will be a wet start to the day for most on a rather breezy day overall, with temperatures set to stretch no higher than 13 degrees.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather is also forecasting dreary conditions for Monday, in particular, when there is “a risk of very heavy rain” and potential for over 20mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The south and southeast of the country are at the “highest risk” of the heavy rainfall and likely to be the worst affected.

Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope approaching the Bank Holiday weekend next weekend, with early signs pointing towards drier and sunnier conditions and temperatures in the high teens.

Check out Met Éireann’s weather forecast for the coming days below.

Sunday

Dry and bright with spells of sunshine for many at first on Sunday afternoon, but cloudier conditions in the west and north with scattered showers spreading elsewhere as the day goes on, some heavy with a chance of hail. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Becoming mostly cloudy on Sunday night with outbreaks of rain spreading northeastwards over the country. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, increasing strong along southern and eastern coasts.

Monday

A wet start to Monday for most, with outbreaks of rain clearing northeastwards through the morning and early afternoon, followed by scattered showers. Rather breezy or windy too in the south and east, with fresh and gusty south to southwest winds but winds lighter and more variable elsewhere. Maximum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

Mostly cloudy on Monday night with further outbreaks of rain spreading from the south overnight. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in a moderate southeast breeze.

Tuesday

Continuing mostly cloudy and wet with showers or longer spells of rain. Some drier and sunnier weather developing later in the day in the south and west. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in a moderate to fresh south or southeast breeze.

Clear spells and just isolated showers on Tuesday night tracking northwards overnight. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees, coldest in the southwest in a light to moderate easterly breeze.

Wednesday

Sunshine and scattered showers on Wednesday, with the possibility of cloudier conditions in the east and northeast. Top temperatures generally ranging from 13 to 15 degrees with light to moderate southeast winds.

Clear spells and some rain in the southeast on Wednesday night slowly spreading inland. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with light and variable winds.

Thursday

A mostly cloudy day with limited sunny spells and scattered outbreaks of showery rain. Highest temperatures ranging from 11 to 16 degrees, with light variable breezes.

Friday

Current indications suggest that Friday and the weekend will become mainly dry with mostly cloudy conditions.
