Ipswich Cup win will take Winx owner Peter Tighe on a nostalgic trip

Peter Tighe’s renowned blue and white colours have won more than most could dream of thanks to the great Winx but he admits it would be a trip down memory lane if they could salute in the Ipswich Cup on Saturday.

The great mare famously won 25 Group 1’s during a glittering career and Tighe now has “six to eight” horses that sport the same colours, including So You Win who is a $3.90 favourite in Saturday’s feature.

While it isn’t the heights of a Cox Plate or Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Tighe said an Ipswich Cup win would be nostalgic.

“We have won a Weetwood in Toowoomba (Sexy Eyes, 2019) but not an Ipswich Cup – those colours have won plenty elsewhere,” he said.

“We would be very proud for those colours to win an Ipswich Cup because I have a lot of fond memories around there.

“I used to go there with my old man when I was a boy when it was called Bundamba so I love the place, I had a lot of fun there. It has got a good country atmosphere to it there, they all like a good time.

“There’s about six to eight (horses) going around in the colours, because of the dual ownership we mix it up a bit, some get them and some don’t.”

On the seven-day back-up, So You Win was originally going to head to Sydney to race on Saturday but trainer Chris Waller made the call to keep him in Queensland where he has been consistent without breaking through.

The six-year-old ran fourth behind Ranier on Stradbroke day over 1600m and while Tighe admits the 2150m of the Ipswich Cup will test So You Win, he has drawn sweetly to get the trip.

“He wasn’t going to race in Ipswich because the distance will probably test him right out,” he said.

“He is good up to 2000m, he was nominated for Sydney over that distance but the horse is fit and well after last Saturday so they can’t get him any fitter so while he is up here, it saves travelling him down south again.

“He (Waller) made the decision to leave him here and scratch in Sydney. He has got the good barrier and the good jock (Luke Dittman) here who has ridden him a lot, we would like to win an Ipswich Cup.”

Stablemate Humbolt Current is also in the market ($8) while Peter Moody’s In Good Health ($4.80) and Matt Dunn’s Laure Me In ($4.20) round out the top chances in betting.
