Virat Kohli on Monday heaped praise on Kolkata Knight Riders mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, saying he will be a key factor to India’s chances when he dons the India blue jersey during the T20 World Cup. Kohli’s comments came after Chakravarthy starred in KKR’s 9-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 31 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in Abu Dhabi.
Varun Chakravarthy continued his impressive run in the shortest format of the game, finishing with figures of 3/13 in 4 overs as he picked up the wickets of Glenn Maxwell, debutant Wanidu Hasaranga and Sachin Baby to break the back of RCB’s batting unit just when the Australian all-rounder tried to rescue the innings after big guns Kohli (5) and AB de Villiers (0) failed to get going.
RCB won the toss and opted to bat in Kohli’s landmark match but the former finalists failed to step up, managing just 92 in 19 overs. It was the 6th lowest total for RCB in the history of the IPL and their 7th sub-100 total in the tournament.
However, Kohli saw the positive in Varun Chakravarthy’s performances, saying he was discussing the mystery spinner’s spell while sitting in the dug-out on Monday.
“Pretty good (Varun’s performance), that’s exactly what I was saying in the dug-out, he’s going to be a key factor when he plays for India. We need to see performances like these from all the youngsters so that the bench strength of Indian cricket stays strong. And, he’s someone who is going to play in the near future for India and it’s a great sign,” Kohli said.

RCB remained in the 5th spot despite the massive defeat on Monday. The Bangalore-based franchise has 5 wins from 8 matches and Kohli believes there is no doubt that they have the firepower to make it to the play-offs for the 2nd successive year.
RCB lost their 6th successive match in the UAE on Monday but Kohli believes it’s only a blip in their campaign after having done wonderfully well in India in April-May.
“We have five wins from eight games, we expect a loss here and there in this tournament. That’s part and parcel of things. You have to take it in your stride like you take your victories in your strides as well,” Kohli said.
“We just need to be professional and stick to our strengths and make sure that we execute the plans that we have properly on the field. We have absolute confidence on this squad that we’ll be able to pull up from the next game onwards and put in strong performances,” he added.
