In the ongoing Test series between India and England, the usage of DRS and technology has been widely talked about, mostly debated against for being seemingly inaccurate. It has once again taken centre stage after Joe Root’s dismissal on Day 3 of the ongoing Test match in Ranchi.

It was a ball that was delivered from around the wicket by Ravichandran Ashwin. It was fullish and pitched around the leg-stump line. The on-field decision was not out, with the possibility of the ball pitching outside leg. However, the DRS showed that a major section of the ball was inside the line, causing the decision to be overturned.

England camp were heart-done by the decision, and former and current English players such as Michael Vaughan and Sam Billings expressed their stance over the results obtained by the ball-tracking technology.

Former England captain Vaughan offered a resolution to the furore that the DRS has triggered in England. While he acknowledges that although technology cannot be totally accurate, he expressed that should not stop them from striving for improvement. He wrote in his column in The Telegraph about how broadcasters can bring transparency from behind the scenes to the viewers when a decision is carried out.

Those running technology in truck are as important as umpires: Michael Vaughan

“So here’s a simple solution to help improve transparency and accountability: stick a camera and microphone in the truck so as a decision is being made, we all know exactly what is going on, and how much humans are involved. And if you stick an ICC official in there as well we’d know that the integrity – something we talk so much about in the game – is intact. You could argue that those running the technology in the truck are as important as the two standing umpires,” Vaughan wrote in his column,

“It would be so much better for everyone – the players, the broadcasters, the technology companies, and the viewers – if there was a camera in the truck that showed us that decision being made, so we can all follow the process. The umpire makes the signal for DRS and we go straight to the truck and show us exactly how we come to the final decision,” Vaughan added.
