Bill Belichick could end up in TV after losing out on Falcons job

Bill Belichick may soon be part of an institution he famously dislikes.

After the former Patriots head coach was passed over by the Falcons in favor of Raheem Morris, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Sunday that a TV gig may be in the cards for the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.

“He can sit out the year, potentially become maybe the most coveted coach next year,” Rapoport said on NFL Network. “… Could be a consultant for a team, certainly a possibility as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he joined us right here. Well not right here but right here in the TV world. Already won an Emmy. Wouldn’t put it past him to try for another.”

Belichick’s Sports Emmy came in 2021 for his work on NFL Network’s 100 All-Time Team series.

The only two head coaching vacancies left are in Seattle and Washington; Rapoport said that Belichick is not a candidate for either.

It would certainly be ironic if Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots earlier this month, spent 2024 on TV after spending the better part of two decades in New England treating reporters as a personal annoyance.

Still, the sport’s most decorated head coach would presumably have no shortage of suitors if that was the route he chose.

NBC’s Mike Tirico, who worked with Belichick on the air for Super Bowl XL, said this week that he was “terrific” in that role.

“If he does decide to do TV for a year or whatever, he’ll be really good,” Tirico told ESPN 1000’s Waddle and Silvy, per Awful Announcing. “Super Bowl 40 aired on ABC, I was at ESPN, we did the pregame show for the ABC broadcast. Bill was on set with me for the game, it was the Seattle-Pittsburgh Super Bowl in Detroit, and he was terrific on the air.

“If you watched that NFL Films 100th anniversary team series of shows, he was great. If he winds up not getting a job and does TV for a year or more, he’ll be awesome. He’ll be the guy that everybody shuts up and listens to, I promise you.”
