Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, called on the Biden administration Tuesday to take over the Texas National Guard, accusing his state’s governor, Greg Abbott, of defying a Supreme Court ruling and using the state’s national guard to “create chaos at the border.”
On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that Border Patrol agents are allowed to cut through or remove razor wire installed by Texas at the southern U.S. border, arguing that it was preventing the federal agents from working.
The new ruling has been criticized by Texas lawmakers like GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, who called it “disgraceful” and a “manifestation of the Biden administration actively fighting against the state of Texas to try to prevent Texas from securing our border.”
Castro urged President Joe Biden to go further in his fight against the Texas governor.
“Governor Greg Abbott is using the Texas National Guard to obstruct and create chaos at the border,” Castro wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “If Abbott is defying yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard now.”
