With his appointment, the VEB has once again brought in a director with a history with the regulator.
Until the end of last year, 50-year-old Everts was a director at the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). Koster was also previously active at the AFM.
Expansion in Europe
Everts previously worked at the European Commission and the Ministry of Finance, among others. In his role at the VEB, the new director will be involved in, among other things, the European expansion of activities. According to the VEB, this development is ‘inevitable’ now that investors and capital markets are operating more and more internationally.
The VEB represents the interests of more than 1.75 million Dutch investors and has more than 34,000 members. The association’s supporters consist of both private and institutional investors.
For the new director of the Vereniging van Effectenhouders (VEB), the energy transition is one of the most important topics on his plate. Gerben Everts, who has been at the helm of the investor association since Tuesday, is guarding against writing off the fossil industry too quickly. “We should not fall into the trap too quickly: green is urgent, gray is wrong.”
Everts also received this as a tip from his predecessor Paul Koster. “It is important that we think carefully about how we position ourselves as VEB in the field of sustainability,” says Everts. “The Shells of this world are desperately needed in the energy transition. They are crucial for, for example, the infrastructure for hydrogen, heat and energy and the realization of the necessary geothermal energy, solar and wind parks.”
Everts calls the experience of the energy companies crucial to achieving the climate goals. “It is important that you do not go along with populism. We need to look closely at what is important to our supporters and ensure that companies make wise choices in time so that investments made now are not overtaken by the future and become worthless.”
