S'gor govt to expand glow-in-the-dark road markings to 15 other locations

THE Selangor government will be expanding the glow-in-the-dark road markings initiative to 15 locations within all nine districts in the state to improve road users’ safety.

“The initiative will be implemented in stages, costing about RM900,000 in total,” said state infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim in a social media post.

“The glow-in-the-dark road markings will be painted on roads without any street lights.”

He said the initiative would cover some 15km of roads in districts such as Sepang, Kuala Langat and Petaling.

“This initiative is in line with the ‘Selangor Bercahaya’ programme, which to date has seen the installation of 600 LED street lamps throughout Selangor,” said the Pandan Indah assemblyman, adding that RM150mil has been allocated for additional LED street lamps this year for road users’ benefit.

Izham said this during a site visit to check the glow-in-the-dark road markings along a 245m stretch of Jalan B17-Sungai Tekali and 215m stretch of Jalan B19-Sungai Lalang. Both roads are located in the Hulu Langat district in Selangor.

However, Izham’s post did not state the timeline for the project implementation.

StarMetro previously quoted Hulu Langat Public Works Department (JKR) district director Mohd Zamri Mohamud as saying that the glow-in-the-dark road markings were to enable cyclists to ride at night even along dark stretches.

According to a news report, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the photoluminescent paint cost RM749 per sqm, compared to RM40 per sqm for conventional road marking paint.

There have been mixed reactions on the cost-effectiveness of the project by Hulu Langat JKR versus the value it brings.
