Inside Michelle Keegan's humble beginnings on Coronation Street and the lessons she learnt as her Netflix hit Fool Me Once reaches number one

She admitted that ‘she feels like she is in a dream’ following the success of Netflix’s hit drama Fool Me Once.

And as the series reaches number one worldwide Michelle Keegan has revealed how her humble beginnings on the cobbles of Coronation Street shaped her into the actress she is today.

Now a global star, the actress, 36, secured her breakthrough role on the soap as feisty Tina McIntyre back in 2008.

She was cast on the programme after her second ever audition and went on to have a hugely successful six years on the show, starring in almost 900 episodes.

Speaking to Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast, Michelle explained the lessons she had learnt from starring on the iconic ITV show.

She began: ‘I’m naturally disciplined but I think that’s come from being in a soap. I think there’s a lot of snobbery surrounding soaps.

‘For me, it’s the best learning platform you can ever do as an actor.

‘I remember we were filming three different storylines at one time, with three different directors, not in chronological order, going back and forward.

‘Being in a soap, it’s so fast-paced you have to be on your game.

‘I feel like that discipline I learnt from soaps at such a young age I sort of carried that through my career. So when I go on set I know exactly what I’m saying and doing.’

Michelle’s character, Tina, featured in a whole host of dramatic storylines, before she was memorably killed off when she was pushed from a balcony and beaten with a pipe by Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis).

She left the soap opera in 2014 to pursue other acting roles and has since described the decision as a ‘risk’, particularly as her character was killed off, ending any chance of a return to the role.

Despite her concerns about her future career, Michelle has gone on to become one of the most sought-after British actresses.

The series sees Michelle’s character Maya deal with the murder of her husband Joe, months after the killing of her sister Claire.

The eight-part drama series, which also stars Adeel Akhtar and Joanna Lumley, is the latest of Netflix’s successful string of adaptations of works by American mystery-thriller writer Harlan.

Not long after Joe’s murder, Maya sees her dead husband on a secret nanny cam which she has installed to keep an eye on their daughter Lily.

Maya’s discovery soon leads to a web of lies and conspiracy as she tries to uncover what has happened to Joe and his family’s potential involvement.
