yashasvi jaiswal needs 29 runs to break cheteshwar pujara’s 11-year-old record & become 1st indian to…
Young Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is on fire against England in the ongoing five-match Test series. In the four Tests played so far, the left-handed batter has scored 655 runs at an average of 93.57 runs. He is the highest run scorer in the series. The 22-year-old cricketer, who is playing in his first Test series at home, has already broken multiple records in the four Tests played so far, and he is on the cusp of achieving many other feats in the fifth Test, which is set to start on Thursday (March 7) in Dharamsala.
During the fifth and final Test of the ongoing series, if Jaiswal manages to score 29 runs, he will become the fastest Indian batter in history to score 1000 runs in Tests. At present, the record is held by Cheteshwar Pujara, who needed 11 Tests to reach the milestone. In terms of innings, the record is in the name of Vinod Kambli. The former left-handed batter completed 1000 runs in Tests in 14 innings of 12 matches.
Fastest to score 1000 Test runs for India (in terms of matches)
POSITION | PLAYER | OPPOSITION | VENUE | MATCH DATE | DEBUT | TIME | MATCHES | INNINGS |
1. | Cheteshwar Pujara | Australia | Hyderabad | March 2, 2013 | October 9, 2010 | 2 year, 144 days | 11 | 18 |
2. | Sunil Gavaskar | England | Kanpur | January 25, 2973 | March 6, 1971 | 1 year, 325 days | 11 | 21 |
3. | Vinod Kambli | West Indies | Mumbai (WS) | November 18, 1994 | January 29, 1993 | 1 year, 293 days | 12 | 14 |
4. | Mayank Agarwal | Australia | Melbourne | December 17, 2020 | December 26, 2018 | 1 year, 357 days | 12 | 19 |
5. | Vijay Hazare | West Indies | Mumbai (BS) | February 4, 1949 | June 22, 1946 | 2 year, 227 days | 13 | 25 |
As of now, Jaiswal has 971 runs to his name in 15 innings of eight Tests. Legendary Sir Donald Bradman completed 1000 Test runs in seven matches, and three batters – Herbert Sutcliffe of England, Everton Weekes, and George Headley (both from the West Indies)—needed nine Tests to achieve the feat. If Jaiswal manages to reach the 1000-run mark in the fifth Test, he will become the joint second-fastest batter in history to complete 1000 runs in Tests.
Apart from this, Jaiswal will also look to become the first Indian batter in history and the third overall to score 700 or more runs in a Test series between India and England. As of now, the record for scoring most runs in an India-England Test series is in the name of Graham Gooch, who amassed a total of 752 runs in the 1990 series played in England. Jaiswal needs 98 runs to break his record.
