Harry Kane ecstatic for Thomas Müller’s new contract extension at Bayern Munich
It was just recently a big week for Thomas Müller at Bayern Munich. He officially extended his contract at the club to run through June 2025, as it was previously set to expire in 2024. The extension is in line with Bayern’s internal rule of not extending a contract for more than one year for players that are over the age of 30, though there have certainly been exceptions. The Raumdeuter followed suit from Manuel Neuer, whose contract was also extended by one year just prior to his own.
Müller also made a return to the starting lineup for Thomas Tuchel for Bayern’s last two Bundesliga matches in the hinrunde; the 3-0 win over VfB Stuttgart and the 2-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg, in which he provided the assist for both of Bayern’s goals. For a long stretch, he had been out of the starting lineup under Tuchel, as the manager had been showing a preference of starting Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, and Jamal Musiala (when fit) alongside and just behind Harry Kane. For two matches, Tuchel had even controversially started Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in a central role just behind Kane with Müller on the bench.
In light of the new contract extension, Kane recently expressed his delight at Bayern having secured Müller for at least one more year. The two have yet to strike up a prolific partnership in Bayern’s attack comparative to that of Kane and Sané, but Müller is a player in the squad that Kane very much admires. “Big congratulations to Thommy, a fantastic player and a fantastic leader of this team. He is everything you could want in a player and teammate. I’m very happy he extended. He had a fantastic game with the two assists. He sets the standard for everyone. We push each other on the training pitch too,” Bayern’s number 9 explained to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia).
While Müller might not be Tuchel’s first choice when all of his attackers are fully fit, he has still shown that he can be very effective when he is chosen. It is obviously more difficult to produce on limited minutes, but it is certainly not out of his wheelhouse to make an impact as a sub, as much as other players in the squad benefit from his presence on the pitch.
