India: Arunachal BJP expels 28 members for contesting elections against official party candidates
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday (May 7) expelled its 28 members for contesting elections in their respective Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies against the party’s official candidates.
The individuals have been removed from the party for a period of six years.
The saffron party released an official statement saying that the members took a decision contrary to the directives issued by the BJP during the Parliamentary and Assembly polls of 2024.
The disciplinary action against the individuals was taken following the recommendations of the State Disciplinary Action Committee.
“The following list of persons have contested election in their respective Assembly & Parliamentary constituencies against the official party candidates in the simultaneous Parliamentary & Assembly Election 2024. Consequent upon the recommendation of the State Disciplinary Action Committee, under the Chairmanship of Shri Tarh Tarak; the Party hereby expels them for a period of Six (6) Years…with immediate effect,” the expulsion order read.
The expelled 28 members contested the elections from the constituencies of the National People’s Party which is headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the People’s Party of Arunachal and the Nationalist Congress Party.
The Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the BJP-ruled state were held on April 19. The results of the Assembly polls will be declared on June 2.
In the 2014 elections, Kiren Rijiju of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency, defeating Nabam Tuki of the Indian National Congress (INC).
Tapir Gao from the BJP clinched victory in the Arunachal East Lok Sabha constituency triumphing over Lowangcha Wanglat of the INC by a significant margin of 69,948 votes.
