Independence Day revellers trigger traffic chaos in capital

AMMAN — Joyous Independence Day celebrations on Thursday took a toll on many commuters as the streets of Amman became gridlocked with revellers.

Many young people parked their cars in the middle of the road to celebrate the occasion, leaving parents with children and emergency cases stranded for hours.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) said that the Traffic Department responded quickly and dealt with the groups that barred roads, bridges and tunnels, and committed various law violations.

Major Ahed Al Saraireh from the Traffic Department said that despite warnings from various security authorities, some groups continued with their violations and even hid their licence plates using stickers and colours, as reported by PSD radio station.

“Immediate actions were taken on sites to address these violations,” said Saraireh.

The official emphasised that the road is meant for everyone, including medical staff and civil defence vehicles, who need “unhindered” access.

Saraireh reiterated that celebrations should be held in designated areas and public parks, while leaving the roads accessible to their users and those in need, to avoid disrupting the interests of the public.

Ahmed Saudi, a frustrated commuter, said: “I couldn’t believe the chaos on the roads. It took me double the usual time to reach my home. People should celebrate responsibly and not inconvenience others.”

Fatima Balawi, a concerned parent, said: “I had my child with me, and we were stuck in traffic for hours. It was an exhausting experience, and it’s disheartening to see people neglecting the needs of others.”

Mohammad Abu Salah, a taxi driver, expressed his frustration and said that on Thursday he went home with his pockets empty.

“As a taxi driver, it was extremely challenging to navigate through the congested streets,” said Abu Salah.
