Iceland issues ‘do not eat’ recall for pies as they could cause severe reactions

Iceland has issued an urgent product recall for one of its popular pies as it could cause dangerous allergic reactions.

The frozen food supermarket chain has recalled its own brand Creamy Chicken Pies as it may contain the preservative sulphites which is not mentioned on the label. If you have an allergy to sulphites – or sulphur dioxide – consuming it can reactions such as wheezing in people with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and hives. In some cases, sulphites can cause anaphylaxis which can kill if not treated urgently.

The Food Standards Agency notice says the products affected have a pack size of 586g with the best before date of September 12 2025 (12/09/25). Iceland confirmed that only the best before dates in the notice are affected, so you will not need to take action if you do not have an item with this date. If you have bought an affected product then you can return it to any Iceland store for a full refund – you will not need a receipt. If you have an allergy to sulphites the supermarket urges customers to not eat the product.

To warn other shoppers, Iceland has point-of-sale notices across its stores. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. What are recall notices?

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn’t working as it should be. The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be “withdrawn” which is where is it taken off the shelves or “recalled” which is when customers are asked to return it.

Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
