The doctor’s words hit hard last week, said the singer, composer and lyricist at the table On 1. ,,There were some spots, but after two and a half months you get a scan and if all goes well, we can irradiate it. That’s how the doctor saw it and that’s how we saw it too. Last week we were at the doctor’s and then we heard a phrase you know from movies and books that you think will never be spoken to you. ‘I have bad news. It’s everywhere. You don’t get any better.” He ‘joked’ to the doctor that he wouldn’t make it to seventy. ,,And he said: the 65 neither, probably. I am now 63.”
He thinks it’s a bizarre situation. “You suddenly find yourself in a trap. I don’t feel very well, I get tired a little faster, but you can’t see anything else.” A few days after he got the news himself, he decided to share it with the world. “It all started with a performance. Then I wanted to sit. I am not the old Jan Rot, I am still at half strength, although my voice is still good. It feels like you have a secret, but I’ve never had a secret in my life.”
He dressed his message on stage soberly. “I said, ‘I have good news. I don’t have much longer to live, but you see me performing now. That won’t save a lot of people anymore.’ That’s gallows humor, but for me it’s the way to deal with it now. Because it’s a sledgehammer for my family. I have four children, the youngest are 10 and 13.” After that performance, he decided to share his story in a message on Facebook.
Since then, his webshop has been very popular. His albums, books and tickets for his new performance OK Boomer flying over the counter. He likes that. “A lot of people are only discovering me now, but they are also people who had forgotten me for thirty years and are now rediscovering me.” Then he played a retranslation of roller coaster by Danny Vera and he received rave reactions from moved viewers on Twitter.
Rot hopes that he will still have a good time. “But actually I hope someone says: we have switched the photos,” he concluded, referring to the scans that showed the tumors.
