Incredible moment a goalkeeper scores from his own box

Goalkeeper Leandro Requena is the toast of world football after scoring an incredible goal from his own box.

The 35-year-old plays his club football for Cobresal in Chile – and on Sunday he left rival shot-stopper Bryan Cortes from Colo Colo red-faced.

With his team up 2-0 in the 77th minute, Argentinian Requena lashed a goal kick over halfway intended for one of his strikers.

To his amazement, Cortes was left scrambling.

Despite the gloveman frantically sprinting to stop the ball, it trickled into the net, sparking pandemonium at the Estadio El Cobre.

Although the away side did score late in the contest, Cobresal ran out deserving 3-1 winners.

The man of the moment later declared he was amazed to find the back of the net.

‘I can’t lie. I wasn’t trying to score,’ an honest Requena declared at the final whistle.

‘Unfortunately for Cortes, the bounce killed him… but luckily it went in for us.’

And in more good news for Requena, he may have written himself into the Guinness Book of World Records.

If validated, Requena’s ‘strike’ will surpass the record currently held by Tom King,  who in 2021 scored a 105-yard goal (96.01 metres) during a game between Newport County and Cheltenham Town in England’s League Two competition.

It is believed Requena’s thumping effort came from a distance of 110.4 yards (101 metres).

For many football fans, Requena’s unusual feat evoked memories of Paraguay goalkeeping great José Chilavert, who scored 67 goals across his decorated career.
