A trailer has been released for the Borderlands movie, starring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the voice of Jack Black as Claptrap.

Of all the many planned TV and film adaptations of video games, Borderlands is perhaps up there with Twisted Metal as one of the more baffling choices in recent years. But that turned out surprisingly well, so maybe this will too.

In the case of Borderlands, the Hollywood acting heavyweights involved include Cate Blanchett as outlaw Lilith, who reluctantly teams-up with a band of misfits on the planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B, Atlas.

As shown in the first trailer, among these misfits is seasoned mercenary Roland played by Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt as pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina, her protector Krieg played by Florian Munteanu, Jamie Lee Curtis’ oddball scientist Dr. Patricia Tannis, and Claptrap voiced by Jack Black.

The film itself is directed by Eli Roth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie. Roth is best known for horror films like Hostel and last year’s slasher Thanksgiving, but he’s also directed family romps like The House With A Clock In Its Walls, also starring Blanchett and Black.

Based on this trailer alone, it certainly seems like it’s shooting for something similar to James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy – between its ragtag band of misfits and rock power ballad soundtrack.

While the original games sport a brand of humour that is aggressively Marmite, this looks far less obnoxious in comparison. At the very least, it looks like the cast is enjoying itself, between the outlandish costumes and action sequences.

Developed by Gearbox Software, 2009’s original Borderlands game has spawned several sequels and spin-offs in the years since. The last mainline entry was 2019’s Borderlands 3, with a fourth entry currently in the works.

Borderlands is set to be released in cinemas on August 9, 2024.
