IMD Predicts More Heatwave Days In Many States, Rainfall Likely In Northeast | Weather Updates

India’s Northwest, parts of the East and the southern peninsular region are likely to witness twice as many heatwave days as normally witnessed in May, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the IMD’s forecast, while three heatwave days are common in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and parts of south peninsular India in May, these regions will experience five to seven such days this month.

“An average of three heatwave days are generally expected in May. But this year, the number of heatwave days are expected to be higher over northwest India and the east and peninsular region also,” said M Mohapatra, director general, IMD.

The weather agency added that around eight to 11 heatwave days are likely over south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and Gujarat region, which also get an average of three days of such days in May.

IMD further added that normal maximum temperatures are likely over “most parts” of India except the northeast, some parts of northwest and central India and adjoining areas of northeast peninsular India where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely.

Above-normal minimum or night temperatures are also likely over most parts of the country, except isolated parts of northwest India, the Indo-Gangetic plains, central India and most parts of northeast India where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are likely.

• The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on May 2.
• Severe heatwave conditions are likely to hit isolated areas of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Gujarat region, Rayalaseema, Telangana and Interior Karnataka on May 4.
• Heatwave conditions are likely over Puducherry, Karaikal and interior Karnataka on May 3.
• Heatwave is likely over Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerela, Mahe and interior Karnataka on May 2.
