Former prime minister John Howard has described the immigration detainee saga as a “terrible administrative failure” amid the government’s “inability to anticipate’ the High Court’s decision.

“I know from experience, if you’ve got a difficult case coming up, you always sort of have plan a and plan b,” Mr Howard told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“They didn’t have that … it’s absolutely terrible.”
Mr Howard said it’s concerning that Labor’s weakening on border protection is “starting ever so slightly at the moment”.
“But unfortunately in this area any sign that will is weakening will encourage people to come and I’m worried.”
