Tata-Air India team to inject $277M into Karnataka

Tata Group-owned airline Air India and plane parts-manufacturer Tata Advanced Systems are teaming up to invest a sum of Rs 2300 crores ($277.2 million) in Karnataka, as announced by the state government on Monday.

The collaboration will see Air India taking charge of aircraft maintenance, repairs, and overhauls at the Bengaluru airport, while Tata Advanced Systems focusses on establishing manufacturing and research & development facilities within the state.

Tata Advanced Systems specialises in crafting cargo and bulk cargo doors for Airbus’ A320neo family of aircraft, which are widely used across Europe.

This investment venture is anticipated to create approximately 1,600 job opportunities directly and more than 25,000 jobs indirectly within Karnataka.

Air India, holding the second-largest market share among domestic Indian airlines as of January 31, is expected to leverage this partnership to further enhance its operations.

This investment initiative follows Tata Technologies’ recent commitment to invest 150 billion rupees in Telangana, underscoring the conglomerate’s broader strategy to expand its presence across different Indian states.

Additionally, Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran hinted at the forthcoming announcement of plans to construct a semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, further highlighting Tata’s continued investment in India.

Notably, various Indian states have been receiving investment promises from prominent companies and conglomerates, including Maruti Suzuki and the Adani Group, during key business gatherings such as the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit and the World Economic Forum held in January.
