WHAT HAPPENED?
Speculation has built that Bayern have turned their attention to Benfica manager Schmidt as a candidate to replace outgoing boss Thomas Tuchel this summer. However, the 57-year-old has made it clear he wants to see out his contract at the Lisbon outfit, which runs until 2026.
WHAT ROGER SCHMIDT SAID
Roger Schmidt
He said: “It’s clear to me that I’ll stay at Benfica until 2026. That’s what I want. That’s why I signed a new contract. I’m not on the market. I have a job at Benfica. As a coach, I also have to see the development and potential for the coming years. I think a lot of things are good.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Bayern’s search for a new manager is turning into something of a nightmare. Efforts to recruit Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann, and most recently Austria manager Ralf Rangnick have come to nothing. Schmidt’s revelation is another blow for the Bavarians.
