'I'm Not Even Going to Answer That': Connor McDavid Brushes Off Question About Opening Night
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers are focused.
The Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games – and as a result get a long break before their next series schedule is announced. Of course everyone knows that they will face off against the Vancouver Canucks, a series that should be entertaining to say the least.
Everyone – especially Connor McDavid – is locked into their “playoff mode”. What I primarily mean by that is they aren’t dwelling on the past and are focused on the next day, the next game.

Everyone is staying even keeled – not too high, not too low. That makes a moment from yesterday’s Oilers practice, not that surprising.
McDavid was asked about the regular season’s opening night game against the Canucks – and whether it was the result was because of “you or them” to which McDavid had this response, “it was so long ago.” He then shakes his head, grappling for words, and eventually says, “I’m not even going to answer that, that was so long ago.”

The next question was then asked if the Canucks have seen the best of the Oilers yet and McDavid had this to say, “I could sit here and say all I want, ultimately we’re going to play a series and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
“They’re a great team – we’re a good team, it’ll be a good series.”

While McDavid and the Oilers are certainly aware of the past and how things went during the season – it’s clear they don’t spend much time thinking about that. They are thinking about the details of their game that they still want to clean up.
They are thinking about the things that matter in this moment – because whatever was going on opening night needed to be addressed then, and certainly not right now.
